Isa Guha Issues Apology After Referring To Jasprit Bumrah As ‘Primate’; Admits To Wrong Word Choice

Isa Guha, the English commentator, became embroiled in controversy after a comment she made during the Border-Gavaskar Trophy on December 15 sparked outrage. While providing commentary for Day 2 at the Gabba, Guha praised Jasprit Bumrah for his exceptional performance, but a poorly chosen phrase quickly caught the attention of viewers. Referring to Bumrah as the “MVP – Most Valuable Primate,” the comment was met with backlash, with many fans finding it offensive and inappropriate. The remark quickly went viral, as social media users questioned the language used and its intent.

Guha’s words came after Bumrah had delivered an outstanding performance, securing his second five-wicket haul of the series and playing a crucial role in India’s efforts to fight back against Australia. Although Guha’s intention was to emphasize Bumrah’s significance to India’s success in the Test, the comment overshadowed her praise and became the focal point of attention. The swift backlash led to an outpouring of criticism from fans who deemed the remark disrespectful.

In response to the criticism, Guha took to the airwaves on Day 3 of the Gabba Test to offer a heartfelt apology. Speaking on Fox Cricket, she explained that her comment had been intended as high praise for Bumrah’s incredible performance, but she acknowledged that the word she had used was inappropriate. Guha expressed her regret for causing any offence and clarified that her remark was not meant to hurt anyone. She emphasized that her intention was to highlight Bumrah’s importance to India’s chances, rather than demean him or his supporters.

Guha went on to say that, as someone of South Asian heritage, she hoped people would recognize that there had been no malice behind her words. She also acknowledged her high personal standards when it came to empathy and respect for others, and expressed deep regret for using a term that could be misunderstood. Guha reiterated her commitment to equality and inclusion, both within cricket and society at large.

Following Guha’s apology, former Indian cricket coach Ravi Shastri praised her for addressing the situation and offering what he described as a “brave” apology. Shastri also shared that he had spoken with the Indian team and confirmed that Bumrah and the Indian camp had not taken offense. He hoped that the incident would not overshadow the exciting cricket being played in the ongoing Test match. Guha’s apology, while necessary, allowed the focus to shift back to the thrilling action unfolding at the Gabba.
